I tried working on a koan like half year ago and dropped it out of frustration. Every once in a while out of the blue the koan comes back to me and it feels like a bubble expanding toward my head and once there as like my mind expands. I've never had instructions what is going on?

Koans without guidance by a teacher are like a quiz. Koans are about facing the question of life and death. To work on a koan from your head are only concepts. If you experience the koan in your head, it is like extraneous thinking. What is important is to follow your breathing and lower your energy.
