Why are monks bald headed?
November 28, 2011, 7:54 amAt the time of the Buddha, there where many other sanghas and groups around, and as a sign of beloning to the sangha of the Buddha, everyone shaved their head. This is how it is told. So the Buddha himself did not shave his head, only the sangha. All the many different Bodhisattvas also did not shave their heads - only the Bodhisattva Jizo. He shaved his head because he wanted to save even the weakest and lowest being in society. Especially people who turned into thieves or murderers were feeling calm when they saw Jizo with a shaved head. It was a symbol to them of Jizo having thrown everything else away, and honestly wanting to help even them.
