It is said that one should practice Zazen all the time meaning while walking standing sitting or lying. How should one practice Zazen while studying reading or writing? Clearly the brain and the intellect are engaged in those actions.

We have the working of the body. Standing, sitting, walking – for all of these we use our body. This does not work only from the head. That is why one needs to know the Tanden, the working of the lower abdomen. That is why we sit zazen. Once you are able to use the tension in the lower abdomen, then study and talking and writing – all of these are not done only from the head. The tension in the tanden is a great support to our concentration. Please from now on, when you stand when you sit when you walk – please take that tension in your lower abdomen as most important. It will be of great support to you.
