Early on the path zazen helps one to find a relative balance which helps one to function in daily life in society. How would you distinguish this sort of balance from true equilibrium and equanimity?

Whether the mind is balanced or not is a matter of habit. Whether we are balance or not depends on how our awareness senses. What is balance? It is to not be aware. There are times we are aware and other times we are not.

What is most important in zen are continued pure mind instances (shonensozoku)

Dokyo Etan Zenji said when he wa 73 years of age:
There is no one who can stay in continued pure mind instances. Finally during the last 2 or 3 years, I am able to experience it.
