In a Zen monastery we have very old traditions. These are an education
so that the monks may awaken to their Buddha nature. In Buddhism there is of
course no God to be found outside, yet we work on awakening to this human truth
within. For this we have a Zen monastery. The responsible to pull the monks
along is the JIKIJITSU. The JISHARYO will check that all passengers on the
train are safe. The SHIKARYO will make sure that training is taking place in
the correct manner, too luxurious food is not good for training, yet enough
food is needed. In order for the monks to be able to eat, the offerings of
society are needed. The SHIKARYO will make sure that there are enough
offerings, that the monks care for the monastery, that SAMU is being done well,
that ZAZEN is not being taken too lightly. The SHIKARYO will care for the
monks. If somebody made a mistake, he will reprimand or punish him. These are
the responsibilities of a SHIKARYO.
