It seems necessary to practice with the intensity of ones head underwater in sesshin or in a monastic setting. How does one develop this necessary intensity in a chosen cultural setting that makes this intensity well very weird.

We do the training because it is necessary, cutting down on our desires and time and making efforts for our practice. This is the base from where we can experience a huge state of mind. Our ego brings in the habitual obstructions, so we negate these during our training. It is not about creating pressure, but to free oneself from the small minded habits.
