Dear Roshi is practicing awareness the main aim of Zen? And can zazen awareness be exaggerated is there such thing as too much of it? I remember a parable by Rinzai where he tells a master thief that the only thing he should do is to be completely immersed in whatsoever he is doing. So is awareness the first and the last thing in Zen does it carry you all the way across the river or is it simply an important side factor? Lovingly

During zazen in the zendo you let go of all connections to the outside world for realizing the depth of mind, for this we sit. In daily life we gather, we take in information from the outside, through our eyes, ears, nose, mouth, bodily sensations. From the origin no ego awareness existed, yet thus it gets build. We gather knowledge and techniques and raise our potential, yet we also create a difference between ourselves and others, and from there the ego wants to become stronger and better than others. From there criminal actions can come forth and it is a very unsettled state of mind. This is something evreyone knows for themselves. Thus we sit and we feel the need for a clear awarenesss. For this there is the need to separate from society. That is zazen. This settled state of mind of zazen is what we can take to society and we cab become each situation in society. In zen we practice samu to learn to live from this settled state of mind, and from there on we can take this to settled state of mind to society.
