I feel there is a fog in my mind keeping me from obtaining any peace. I struggle with bad memories that put me in a very bad mood. Sometimes I can fight them off by acknowledging them and letting go but a lot of times they put me in such a mood that I don't want to practice Zen. What can I do?

There is also the need to accept these difficult memories from the past. In our mind there is "too bad" and "empty mind moment". This empty mind moment is huge, and to be able to take these encounters of "too bad" and integrate them into this empty huge mind, that is awakening. Yet what you cannot let go of, you cannot let go.
