The physical difficulty of sitting is sometimes great at others as if the sitting is doing itself. It seems that the best is of course when the mind settles into zazen. But I have also noticed getting to this point occurs when the body's form is better. How important is the physical component?

Of course for zazen it is most helpful if your physical body is in a good condition. Yet also the surroundings have a huge influence. For zazen the highest human concentration is needed. We have gathered through life times much dust on our mind, and that is what we purify in our zazen. That is why we also need to look after our physical body so that we can stay healthy. For that the precepts are our guiding light. When we practice zazen, we actually do become naturally more healthy, because we stop doing extraneous things.
