I have an instinctive feeling or belief that shame and guilt are two important emotions. But I am unable to decide exactly why or how this is so. Can you explain how shame and guilt function from the standpoint of Zen? Is this a question you have considered?

These are human´s natural emotions. Hell, hungry ghosts, animal realm, humans, heavenly realm - there are these six realms it is said. Humans have natural wisdom from where shame and guild bring forth the wish to follow the path towards enlightenment, and it is the experience of enlightenment which changes these emotions into compassion.
