I don't consider myself a very spiritually sensitive person and I hear many Zen teachers say in our zazen we should focus on or open from the hara or tandem but I've never felt any different energy there nor have really been able to do that. What do you suggest?

Don´t hurry - Don´t create a form. Have a good time when sitting zazen. If it were making you feel bad, you would not continue. It would be good if you could integrate zazen a little in your daily life and stick to this schedule every day. When you sit, to only sit, counting your breaths so that your thoughts do not distract you. Exhale to the last point. When sitting in this way, your body will slowly remember. Don´t think about shallow or deep - simply stay with the practice.
