This year´s sesshin at Tahoma ended with 48 participants in lovely spring weather, with the plum trees in full bloom already and even the cherry trees starting to open their blossoms. The Roshi gave the closing poem (see below) for the last day of teisho which also covered the last part of the Vimalakirti Sutra. For September the teisho will be on the Yasenkanna "Idle Talk on a Night Boat" by Hakuin Ekaku Zenji. Yesterday a public talk and calligraphy demonstration took place in the beautiful Japanese gardens of Portland which was limited to 70 participants. Today the Roshi is spending a day in kosesshin style with about 14 sangha members in Tahoma, giving a public talk tomorrow evening in Richmond Congregational church in Seattle on "The heart of Peace", and returning to Sogenji Japan the following day.
Closing Poem for Teishos on the Entrustment Chapter of the Vimalakirti Sutra Tahoma Sogen-ji Monastery, February 23, 2015
The Dharma Gate of Nonduality:
the Buddha speaks—
Vimalakirti shows how to penetrate
to the source.
Reading and chanting we come to the close of the teishos
Steadily sitting we must investigate
the root of the Great Vehicle!
