The practice of Shakyo (sutra writing) is of great importance in strengthening our concentration. It does not have to be written in Chinese characters, but in our own language. Having a copy of a grey lettered sutra, we trace these lines, and even though they should turn out the same as the printed text, if we feel our mind being unsettled, we can see the difference, we can feel that we are not writing from a centered place with concentration. In the practice of Zazen we have no form, but in the practice of shakyo we can right away see, how our state of mind is. Writing one letter after the other, carefully and with attention, we can calm and center our mind again, also strengthening our concentration.
