Idaten Sutra

Entrance GENKAN at Sogenji with the Idaten altar in the back.

Sutra being read at the altar of Idaten at Hokuozan Sogenji Germany.

After Buddha Shakyamuni entered into Nirvana, it is said that the relics of the Buddha were stolen, and it was Idaten who ran after the thieves to retrieve the ashes. Ever since then he is seen as a protector of the Buddhist teaching, and busy running here and there to gather food for the monks in training. He is seen as a guardian deity, a swift runner, thus the Sutras are read very fast as well.

We read the Japanese Heart Sutra in the mornings, and at night the Buchinson Shin Dharani, both followed by the special Idaten incantations.
