Happy Buddha´s Birthday

This year the Happy Buddha´s Birthday coincides with Happy Easter.

The Roshi gives this poem in front of the altar with the Baby Buddha statue:

Myoso Enmyo Kemon Rissu
Shunko Sude ni Hasshite Sogen ni mitsu
Yanagi aoku, sakura shiroku shite
Kyo tsukuru nashi
Kanro Amaneku soso gi Button ni shasu

Without form yet clearly apparent
Becoming spring light already all over Sogenji
Willows are green, cherry blossoms white
There is no end to this joy in giving thankfulness to the Buddha

Traditionally during the morning choka, the sangha in pairs of two walk up to the altar, bow, and pour sweet Amacha tea over the little baby Buddha statue with small bamboo ladles, while the whole sangha keeps reading the following poem in Japanese over and over again, until the last person has given their offerings to the baby Buddha:

GO KIN KAN MO SHI JI RAI
JIN SHI SO NEN KUN TEI JU
U JU SHUN SAN RIN RI KU
ZUN SHIN JI RAI JIN PA SHIN

Now we are offering pure water of thankfulness to the Buddha
Magnificent pure wisdom bringing forth immeasurable merit
Helping the people of society to let go of the five impurities
Same as the Buddha´s enlightenment, returning to our pure mind.
