Han

A HAN is a heavy solid board of wood hung by the front door of the Zendo.

The master speaks to the assembly:
Do not waste precious time
Time waits for no one
do not lose sight of the great matter
(of birth and death)

Ooo
OOOOOOO o
OOOooooooooo
OOOOO o
OOOooooooooo
OOO o
OOOooooooooo
ooO

..

It is struck in a set pattern as opening Han for sanzen in the morning and at night, and to close the daily rules before yaza at night. In Sogenji it is also struck before the big drum announcing Teisho.
