Every year in Japan the emperor sets a theme for the New Year – this is called CHOKUDAI. This is also the theme for the Imperial poetry contest. The theme for next year is KISHI 岸 - shore, other side
The Roshi also wrote a calligraphy which uses this theme, it is the second line of a double verse:
Kishi ni kakatte hana sakashima ni shozu.
Hanging from a cliff, the flower grows upside down
Even in extreme difficulties, life still continues.
