Sogenji monastery

Kaisanki 開山忌

The yearly memorial celebration for the founding priest Setsugai Osho of Sogenji and gathering of priests who mostly lived in Sogenji as Kozo, young monks who went to school and trained in the monastery at the same time, took place this weekend. The Kaisanki ceremony consists of a sutra on Saturday afternoon read in the Kaisando building where the grave of the founding priest is. Some priests stay overnight, playing Go and talking about the good old days until late that night. After the Choka and formal breakfast on Sunday morning, the main ceremony takes place in the Hondo, with lay followers attending as well. After that a traditional meal is served, to the priests in the Denneshitsu room, the Zazenkai people in the Kohojo and the Lay followers in the Shoin. The Bizenryu tea school also helps with hosting the tea ceremony room and serving the meal.
